Dr Tabrizian completed medical school at the University of Western Australia in 1982. He worked in hospital medicine in Australia and abroad for 14 years before venturing into a combined privatre practce of General practice and anaesthetics. With a love an dinterest in biochemistry he applied this knowledge in his general practice with good results. Consequently, his Nutritional Medicine practice is based on applied biochemsitry. In 1999 he began to practice solely in Nutritional Medicine and now he runs a successful Nutritional Medicine clinic in Perth's northern suburbs, which trains and employs doctors interested in this speciality. He has written 7 books on nutritional medicine including a textbook for medical practitioners. He lectures regularly around Australia to lay groups and health practitioners, and trains doctors in Nutritional Medicine.
On Saturday November 27th2004, Dr Igor Tabrizian delivered a lecture on Autism to a well-informed Sydney audience. The attendees gained insight into how clinical nutritionists examine the mechanisms and formulate treatment schedules for Autism. The lecture was again complemented by his "killer" graphics which made the difficult concepts simple.
The lecture looked at normal brain function with regards to nutritional needs of the mother and child. It examined the importance of tissue co-operation such as hormones, gut and brain in ensuring correct development of all the tissues in the growing child.
But in particular the lecture looked at where brain function goes wrong in Autism and more importantly why this is happening as a global epidemic. It examined the roles of genetics and antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of Autism and looked at the roles of toxic metals in the genesis of the disease and how these generate the symptoms of Autism.

The term nutritional medicine often misleads doctors into thinking that the specialty primarily involves diets and lifestyle changes. Orthomolecular medicine is probably as better description but has a rather tarnished reputation. So we resort to the term nutritional medicine so as not to alienate out patients and colleagues. Page one of any pathology textbook will tell you that by the time disease is detectable by microscopy there must have involved a structural change. The structural change must have involved an alteration in the biochemistry in a direction away from the direction that nature intended. They will say look up a biochemistry book to find out what this change entails. The biochemistry books fail to link the pathobiochemistry with the clinical symptoms and everybody basically passes the buck. Nutritional medicine links the various specialties and tries to explain all the phenomena.
By the age of 3 months, the thymus gland has issued a full set of life-long instructions to the lymphocytes about how the immune system should behave under various scenarios. With progressively more understanding of the biochemistry of the brain we are able to prevent crippling disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and even Multiple Sclerosis. There are nine "puzzle pieces" that we need for understanding the brain. The next thing about the central nervous system, the CNS, is that it has three points of vulnerability. In this lecture Dr Tabrizian talks about the common nutritional abnormalities seen in his Cancer Practice. By using blood and hair analysis, the biochemical profile of a patient with cancer can be elucidated. Furthermore the patterns often explain the mechanism of the cancer and its progression. Most of these abnormalities are correctable. The final message is that 60 % of these predispositions could have been prevented by better nutrition and better Environmental Decisions could have prevented 95 % of cancers.

Diabetes is a growing concern in westernized countries and is appearing in younger people everyday. Dr Tabrizian examines the biochemical and toxicological aspects of this modern day epidemic (both Type I and Type II) in his usual no-holds-barred style. In 1991 two researchers won a Nobel Prize for their work on "Channelopothies". This new term (yet to be included in our endocrenologists' vocabularies) has helped explain the reason why common treatments do not work in some patients with Diabetes. Doctors are not taught about the value of tissue samples for any application other than histopathology. Minerals with charges like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum and chromium are very easy to study because deficiencies of them give "tell-tale" symptoms. However, it is more fruitful to examine why minerals vary from the reference ranges. Variations from the reference ranges could also be due to incorrectly set management systems. The mineral level that is out of range is a message that the system is damaged or perhaps being influenced by a toxic compound. Toxic elements like arsenic, cadmium, lead and aluminium affect the nutrient mineral levels by pushing some minerals higher than the reference range. But sometimes you do not see that magnitude of the toxic load until you provoke the system to push out some of these toxins. At the end of the day, a test is not a diagnosis; it is just the beginning of another investigation.
